The New Executive Career Risk: Becoming Invisible
Early in my career, John taught me that success is built on more than results. It’s built on relationships, generosity, and investing in others long after your paths diverge. One phrase guided how John lived and led: “Press On.” (in red ink)
In Memory of John R. Kovalcik Jr.
Before this month’s newsletter, I want to dedicate these thoughts to the memory of John R. Kovalcik Jr., who passed away a few weeks ago after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
John was many things to many people husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, mentor, friend, and leader. To me, he was my first boss and one of the earliest examples of what great leadership looks like.
Early in my career, John taught me that success is built on more than results. It’s built on relationships, generosity, and investing in others long after your paths diverge.
One phrase guided how John lived and led:
“Press On.”(in red ink)
His example reminded me that our greatest professional legacy is often the people we help along the way.
This month’s message is inspired by that lesson.
The New Executive Career Risk: Becoming Invisible
Many executives today are asking:
“Why am I not seeing opportunities I know I’m qualified for?”
The answer often isn’t capability it’s visibility.
Today, many executive opportunities are filled through referrals, networks, board connections, and strategic introductions before jobs are ever posted. Experience still matters, but visibility, positioning, and relationships matter just as much.
Ask yourself:
- How visible are you in your industry?
- Can others clearly articulate your value?
- Are you known for your title or your impact?
Relationships Still Matter
John understood something many leaders forget relationships are long-term investments.
The strongest career opportunities often come from trust built overtime not transactions.
Your network, reputation, and authentic relationships remain among your most valuable career assets.
Your Brand Is Your Leadership Story
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear:
“My work speaks for itself.”
Unfortunately, great work that nobody sees creates limited opportunity.
Executive branding isn’t self-promotion. It’s making your leadership value clear so decision-makers understand where you fit and what you can deliver.
Your brand should answer one question:
Why you?
Staying Relevant Means Staying Visible
The question organizations ask today isn’t:
“What have you done?”
It’s:
“What can you help us accomplish next?”
Leaders who continue attracting opportunities evolve their narrative, expand their networks, and communicate their value clearly.
Final Thought
Career management is not something you do only when you need a job.
It’s an ongoing leadership strategy.
As I reflect on John’s life, I’m reminded that titles fade and impact remains.
Our greatest legacy is the people we encourage, support, and inspire.
In his honor and in the spirit, he modeled so well:
Press On.
With gratitude,
